Her desire to provide a good home life meant she had to maintain higher household work standards and keep hear home spotlessly clean. Maintaining a higher degree of cleanliness gave her the satisfaction of being a good home-maker. She valued other people's opinion of her and therefore regulated their visits when her home was not presentable. To save herself of an embarrassment she politely asked: 'Don't visit us, our house is messy.'
'I found I was quietly going round the twist' Mrs. Hope had gone back to paid work against her husband's wishes. During child-bearing she found being a mother and a housewife was not like living a full life: 'Being a housewife I was very bored, I felt inadequate, like I wasn't contributing to the family at all.'
By not contributing economically to the family she felt dependent on her husband for money, friendship and companionship. She recalled the days when she felt stranded in a house full of children.
Mrs. Hope: I was very dependent on him (husband) so when he got home I followed him around to talk to and wanted to be with him. So because of boredom, feeling of ups and downs with three kids to look after...yes...I still felt inadequate.
Now having gone back to paid work for 'life beyond the four walls' she was forever trying to demonstrate her commitment to her family. She explained that ever since she started to earn an income their standard of living had improved, they had renovated their family home and had acquired more furniture.
She said her family values were traditional and respectable. Because of hex endurance and commitment to her husband and children, she believed her involvement in the labour force would not badly affect her family. She continued to perform her duties as a wife and mother and made sure the household remained her responsibility. She further strengthened her argument for family commitments: 'That's the way I have been brought up, looking at my parents.'
She preserved her image of a 'good mother' by comparing her childrearing practices with those of other people. She believed good parenting can be achieved by bringing up children with discipline.
Mrs. Hope: I don't believe in a lot of the modern ways of doing things. I like the way I was brought up...I was brought up with morals and discipline. When I ask my children to do something for me I feel that they have to do it. That's what discipline is.
Raising her children to help around the house was a value Mrs. Hope associated with good mothering.
Mrs. Turnbull was a career woman for many years before getting married and having children. After her first son was born she gave up paid work to be a mother on a full-time basis. However, she found she was unsuitable for this role, missing contact with her friends and colleagues. Her efforts to going back to part-time employment were shattered when she learned the job structure did not have that flexibility. She had no choice but to stay with her son or go back to full-time employment.
